People and PHL

Not everyone who goes to Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth is there to photograph Portland Head Light. Quite the contrary- the park is a common destination for family picnics, walking, recreational fishing, kite flying, painting, watching the ships go by, and many other activities unrelated to photographing lighthouses.

For residents it is just "The Fort", a focal point of town life. The organized activities there range from Family Fun Day to high school graduations and prom pictures to our now famous Beach To Beacon 10k road race. Some of these leave an intriguing residue, such as rose petals in The Morning After, shot after a CEHS graduation. But most such things pass without the outside world really noticing.

Observing the everyday ebb and flow of life in the park can be fascinating in its own right. Watching how people interact with this iconic lighthouse and its beautiful natural setting can provide a whole new range of photographic opportunities. The images in this section are an exploration of a small part of that territory.
